More Fabulosity!!!

On Monday, after arriving in Nashville and napping, I had a weekend debrief session with my mother. At some point she said something to the effect of, "I enjoy seeing your girls together...you all remind me of Sex and the City." To that I say, "Carrie and 'em, eat your hearts out!"

Can You Say Fierce?

Ok, so I'm not one to brag, but I have to say that I felt absolutely FABULOUS on my graduation day! I could not wait to peel out of my robe and show the world--ok, the folks in Madison--my beautiful, curvy, adult self. My soul was singing, I felt comfortable in my body, and it showed! Don't believe me...take a look! Can you say fierce?

Overjoyed...

Shout out to one of my Blogging Sistahs LC...her Tuesday Fab Quote for the week was, "I am far from perfect. But I will be perfect for that imperfect somebody that is perfect for me" (Unknown).

This resonates deeply within my soul, even as I speechlessly celebrate and bask in the glory of God for my recent engagement. One day I will tell the story, but for now, I'll let a single picture speak...

Lena's Gone Home...

In the midst of (still) writing my final paper, I need to pause to honor and celebrate the life of Lena Horne (June 30, 1917-May, 9, 2010). I have few words right now to describe the powerhouse of a woman that was Lena Horne, but I will say that she exuded grace in all that she did. There was indeed a simple elegance about her. In many ways, especially for African American female actresses and singers, her life and work was a gift that opened doors and opportunities.

Here is to you, Ms. Lena. My prayer is that one day I will embody the grace that you so wonderfully lived...

Happy Mother's Day?

In the midst of preparing my message for tomorrow–Mother’s Day–I had a feeling that the sermon I was preparing was not the one I was supposed to be preaching. So, I took a nap and woke up with the following on my heart:

I also want to honor the mothers who have suffered from postpartum depression, whose sadness overtakes them in a time of great joy. I want to honor the mothers who have miscarried and who have had still-born children. I want to honor the mothers whose wombs are not capable of bearing children who have been made to feel outcast and ashamed. I want to honor the mothers whose children are deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan in this very moment. I want to honor the mothers who have a son or daughter behind bars in this very moment. I want to honor the mothers who have had to witness their children experience profound pain. I want to honor the mothers who have lost children to addictions, sickness and disease. I want to honor the mothers who have lost children to senseless accidents and violence. I want to honor the mothers who for whom Mother’s Day is traditionally a time of sadness instead of a day to celebrate. Can we give God thanks for these mothers too?

And so, with these mothers in mind, I will preach from Psalm 42. It is my prayer to acknowledge their pain and perhaps, even, speak a word of hope in the midst of their disquieted souls…

I think I can, I think I can...

We all remember the wisdom from the Little Engine the Could, when climbing up the hill he said, "I think I can, I think I can..."

I am relying on the Little Engine's wisdom to get me through the next few days. Actually, let me rethink and rephrase that. As a woman of faith I am relying on the grace and wisdom of God. So my assurance comes fom the wisdom of the Apostle Paul when he said, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13).

Jesus, give me strength for these two papers...
